Undemocratic Sovereignty Deal being fast-tracked, again?
The State Department, USA/State department
UK Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Sir Oliver Robbins meets with US Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau today at the State Department, Washington.
A sign the undemocratic the Chagos Islands Sovereignty Deal, the UK Government has agreed-in-principle with Mauritius, is being fast-tracked, again?
This comes after months of tit-for-tat announcements by the UK Government and Mauritius governments for and against details of the deal-in-principle already agreed.
It was reported last year that the UK was trying to speed up the treaty before US President Trump was inaugurated. This month it was reported that Mauritius is asking for more money, and alot more to be paid upfront.
No.10 says negotiations are proceeding again after the Trump administration supported the deal.
In parliament on 2 April Stephen Doughty MP, Minister of State at the FCDO, said, “We have been hugely grateful for the close co-operation between the United Kingdom and the United States throughout the negotiations, and to the Administration for their extensive and detailed engagement, which has helped us to make progress on this deal.”
Today the Foreign Office representative’s visit to Washington may be an attempt to get the US’s support behind all of Britain’s proposals for the treaty, to fast-track its progress, again.
